On the comeback trail from his fifth knee reconstruction, Sydney defender Alex Johnson has been boosted by the news he’ll be a Swan for at least another 12 months.

Johnson has agreed to terms on a new one-year deal as he eyes a return to the Swans’ back-six.

The 24-year-old’s recovery is on track following what has been a well-documented four-year ordeal since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2013.

The rebounding defender, who joined the Swans with pick 57 in the 2010 national draft, played 45 games in his first two seasons to emerge as one of the Club’s brightest young talents.

A highly respected member of the team, Johnson received the 2016 Best Clubman Award for the positive role he’s played around the club and the time he’s spent with the NEAFL team to develop the next generation of players.

Swans Head of Football Tom Harley says he’s rapt for Johnson.

“We have always been committed to giving AJ every possible chance to return to senior football,” Harley said.

“This coupled with the fact that Alex is such a quality young man made for a very straight forward decision.

“I speak on behalf of everyone involved with the Sydney Swans when I say that we can't wait to see Alex extend his games tally with the Club."

Johnson follows Kieren Jack, Nick Smith, Luke Parker, Gary Rohan, Jeremy Laidler, Harry Cunningham, Dan Robinson, George Hewett, Aliir Aliir, Jake Lloyd, Tom Papley, Nic Newman and Dean Towers to re-sign with the Swans in 2016.
