He hasn't played since Round 23, 2014, but that hasn't stopped Sam Naismith from throwing his name in the mix for Sunday's clash against Melbourne.

With a huge task against arguably the form ruckman of the competition in Max Gawn and Kurt Tippett sidelined for at least the next six weeks, an opportunity has presented itself to Naismith and Toby Nankervis after the pair were included in Sydney's 25-man squad.

Who'll be selected in the final side will be determined at 5pm today (Friday) but assistant coach Henry Playfair, speaking to SwansTV earlier in the week, said Match Committee wouldn't be afraid of rolling the dice with Naismith despite his limited exposure at senior level.

Nankervis has played six games since his debut in Round 12 last season, including one this year against Adelaide in Round 4.

Naismith on the other hand has had to endure a tough run with injury since his last appearance, but has strung strong performances in the NEAFL and according to the coaches is ready to step in.

"Both of those guys have been playing well at reserves level, so they'll be ready to go if we pick them," Playfair said.

"The luxury we've got is we've got genuine ruckman in the reserves to come in so we'll throw around the magnets, make sure we get through training and then make the call.

"If (Naismith's) form warrants it and we think he's up for playing big minutes in the AFL we've got no hesitation in picking him. He's a really tall guy, really athletic and got great hands so he gives us a little point in difference in the ruck."
