The Swans Reserves will meet Belconnen in the AFL Canberra Grand Final next Sunday after posting a one-point win over Eastlake at the weekend. The Swans Reserves have won the last three AFL Canberra premierships.

In the first quarter Eastlake were on top, with the Swans lacking intensity, but they missed a number chances, kicking one goal and five behinds. Goals to Daniel Currie, Nick Smith and Jake Orreal for the Swans had them eight points up at the first break.

Both teams kicked five goals in the second quarter with Eastlake playing man-on-man. The margin had increased to just nine points by half time, with goals to Ed Barlow, Ryan Brabazon, Currie, Matthew O’Dwyer and top-up player Brendan Edwards.

Eastlake again missed a number of opportunities in the third term, kicking just two goals and piling on six behinds while the Swans kicked three goals, three behinds. Brabazon kicked his second goal for the Swans and Currie kicked another two to take his tally to four for the game.

The Swans went into the final quarter with a 12-point lead but Eastlake kicked the first two goals of the term to level the scores by the six minute mark. Ten minutes into the term, Eastlake had the lead but a goal a minute later to Swans’ top-up player Matt Bernasconi put the Swans back in front. The game continued in an arm wrestle until the Swans finally came out one point winners.

Smith, who was drafted from Oakleigh at number 15 in the 2006 Rookie Draft, was the Swans’ best playing in the midfield. While Aaron Bruce at half-back, Peter Faulks at fullback and midfielder Ben Mathews were also good. Currie, who alternated between ruck duties and full forward and Brabazon, on ball, were also in the Swans’ best.

The Swans will now meet Belconnen for the third time in four matches in the Grand Final on Sunday 14 September at Manuka Oval.
