Sydney Swans ruckman Mike Pyke has called an end to his remarkable playing career.

Pyke, 31, has elected to call time on his career after 110 games in the red and white and pursue opportunities in the corporate sector.

The former rugby union player and Canadian International representative joined the Swans in 2008 after the recommendation from one of his friends to send his highlights reel to AFL clubs.

He was recruited as a rookie in 2008 and debuted in Round 6 the following year at the SCG.

His breakout year came in 2012 when he returned to the side in Round 8 and played every game thereafter, including the 2012 Grand Final.

Coach John Longmire said it had been a unique and incredible journey for Pyke.

"To take up the game as a 25-year-old from another professional sport, and to retire a premiership player with 110 games under your belt is a really special achievement," he said.

"We have seen so many players try to cross over to AFL from other sports but few have achieved what Mike has been able to do.

"He is a talented athlete but it is his incredible drive and determination that has helped him have such a great career."

Pyke said it was the right time to step aside and wished to thank the Club for the opportunity to play AFL.

"You hit a point as an athlete where you review your games, review where you’re at and you ask yourself whether you’ve got any more improvement left in you," Pyke said.

"I got to the point where I didn’t think I had any more improvement left in me and that’s when you know to step aside and let the younger players come through.

"I’m very appreciative of the support Sydney Swans have given me. Thanks to the Swans supporters out there for supporting me, and cheering loudly when I kicked a goal, or came off the ground and for making a joke about being Canadian.

"I always appreciated it and always loved it."
