Swans midfielder Tom Mitchell has officially declared himself fit and available for Sunday’s clash with St Kilda after making a swift recovery from a serious eye injury.
After what was thought to be a potential two-week stint on the sidelines, Mitchell has shrugged off the eye injury which forced him out of last weekend’s derby and is in the mix for selection ahead of the Round 22 encounter at Etihad Stadium.
The 22-year-old copped an accidental poke in the eye from a teammate during a tackling drill in the Swans’ final training session last Thursday which forced the ball magnet out of training earlier than anticipated.
Club doctors erred on the side of caution and drew a line through his name with the poke causing bleeding behind the eye.
Speaking to SwansTV at a team recovery session on Tuesday, Mitchell was keen to get back to business.
“It’s feeling a lot better this week,” Mitchell said after the early morning dip at Maroubra’s Mahon Pool.
“It was a little bit frustrating to miss a game through something that was pretty small but in the end it was probably too risky to play and potentially cause further damage.
“I went and saw the doctor on Monday and I have been given the green light to train and play so I’m definitely available.
“I’m just looking forward to having a run around and kick as well.”
Mitchell has averaged 26 disposals over 15 games this season, exceptional form which he believes won’t be hindered by the recent setback.
Mitchell is one of several players vying for a spot in the senior side with Lance Franklin, Gary Rohan, Ben McGlynn and Craig Bird all potential inclusions for the trip to Melbourne.
