Star forward Lance Franklin is excited about the challenge his side faces to overcome the GWS Giants in Sydney Derby IX at the SCG this afternoon.

After a strong start to the season Franklin will look to spearhead his side to victory against the cross town rivals in front of a packed house.

Franklin said the Swans would have to be wary of the Giants who are a more experienced side than in previous seasons.

“The last few years they have been a developing young team but this year they are playing some really good football,” Franklin said.

“We are going to have to be at our best to beat them so it is going to be a really good contest and is great for football in NSW.”

It will be a special night for two retiring legends with Adam Goodes and Mike Pyke to take part in a lap of honour during half time of the match.

Franklin said it would be great for Goodes to get due recognition for an amazing career.

“Goodsey was a special person and I was fortunate enough to get him during the back half of his career,” he said.

“I spent two years with Goodsey and he was unbelievable for my development on and off the field.”

“I am very privileged to have played some football with him.”
