It was the first All-Australian cap for the three players, who were all instrumental in the Swans’ 2013 success.
McVeigh produced arguably his most consistent season to date and excelled in a variety of roles throughout the year.
The third-year co-captain led the club’s goal tally after five rounds before a spate of injuries forced him onto the half-back line, where the 28-year-old thrived for the majority of the season.
McVeigh notched up 30-plus possessions in nine games in 2013, including an inspiring individual effort in the Swans’ semi final win over Carlton, where he collected 42 touches.
McVeigh’s stellar season also resulted in him taking out his second Bob Skilton Medal ahead of fellow co-captain Kieren Jack.
Jack, who was named co-captain in place of Adam Goodes at the beginning of the season, also enjoyed a consistent year in 2013 and was regularly amongst the Swans’ best.
Despite battling glandular fever during the pre-season, Jack bounced back to average 25.2 disposals and just over six tackles in the 2013 season and also claimed a top ten finish in this year’s Brownlow Medal count.
The Swans’ leading vote getter in the 2013 Brownlow Medal, Dan Hannebery, produced a career-best season for the Swans and showed why he is one of the club’s most exciting young players.
The 22-year-old collected 40-plus possessions on two occasions in 2013, including a dominant 42 possession efforts against Adelaide in round 11.
Swans midfielder Josh Kennedy and defender Nick Malceski were also named in the 2013 All-Australian extended squad of 40 players, but missed out on final selection.
What they said
“He was named co-captain this year and he’s led from the front and his games this year have been at a really high level and he’s one of the best mids in the competition,” McVeigh reflects on Jack’s season in 2013 (16/9/13)
“Jarrad stood up in big games throughout the season and led from the front. He's an outstanding player and co-captain,” John Longmire on McVeigh’s brilliant season (04/10/13)
“I thought his finals series last year really showed what he can do and this year he’s gone to another level to become an elite midfielder. He’s only 22, so it’s quite scary that he’s made his first All-Australian team,” Kieren Jack on Dan Hannebery’s rise
