Sydney Swans coach John Longmire has implored his team to find further consistency to not allow opposition teams the opportunity to get into the game.

The Swans are coming off consecutive losses to Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs as they prepare to take on Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday night.

Longmire said it was important that his side continued to work on decreasing any lapses suffered throughout the game.

“The competition is so tight and we are like other teams in that you can’t afford to have lapses in games and we have had lapses in games that have hurt us,” Longmire said.

“We have got back going again but not able to peg it back the last two weeks, last week was about a twenty minute block from half way through the third quarter.

“Opposition teams now are really well drilled, really good at being able to make you pay and we made a few mistakes in that area and know we need to get better at that.

“We need to be a bit more consistent over four quarters.”

Longmire is adamant his side are prepared for a competitive Melbourne side this week, coached by his former mentor Paul Roos.

“They have been able to recruit really well over the last couple of years to get some players in from other clubs but also draft really well,” Longmire said.

“The depth of the Demons has increased through that and they showed last week particularly in that second quarter that they can be competitive so we understand what is in front of us.”

Roos and Longmire joined together ahead of Saturday night’s Pink Lady match to support fundraising and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The Swans coach said he there would be nothing out of the ordinary happening on the field on the weekend.

“We obviously share similar philosophies on how the game should be played,” Longmire said of Roos.

“To be able to spend so much time under Paul at the Swans was a great learning experience for myself.”

“Understanding what the fundamentals are and to appreciate what it takes to be a really good team and Paul is instilling that in the Melbourne Football Club as he did the Swans.”
