Co-captain Jarrad McVeigh admits the Sydney Swans will have to re-open old wounds to properly prepare for next week’s Qualifying Final against GWS.
Both sides claimed a win and were dealt a blow in the clubs’ two encounters of the home and away season, the last ended in a comprehensive victory to the Giants at Spotless Stadium.
Aside from the weekly post-game review ticked off on the following Monday, McVeigh said the playing group had not hit the replay button on the Round 12 vision.
It was however high on the agenda, McVeigh said, as the Swans prepare for the first ever all-Sydney final.
“We haven’t spoken about it yet, we’ve only just learnt who we’re playing,” McVeigh told media at Tuesday’s finals launch at Sydney’s Luna Park.
“We’ll do our research and homework over the next two weeks. We’ll look at that game, certainly.
“They taught us a lesson that game so we’ll definitely have to improve on that.”
McVeigh and coach John Longmire will be hoping for improvement across many areas, but most specifically countering the Giants’ damaging outside run.
Longmire’s men were smashed in uncontested possessions (199-245) in the 42-point defeat while they were a shell of their usual contested ball-winning selves (139-159).
“(We’ll look at) the way we defend them as a team,” McVeigh added.
“They have highly skilled players and (together) they’re a fit and hard-running team.
“We have to counter that and we’ll look at how we can work them the other way as well.”
The September 10 final will be the 11th and most significant of the Sydney derbies
Longmire and McVeigh were joined by GWS counterparts Leon Cameron, Callan Ward and Phil Davis for Tuesday’s press conference with NSW premier Mike Baird and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres also in attendance.
The 2016 Premiership Cup was flown up to Sydney and proudly displayed to mark the occasion.
