The Swans’ match committee will wait until Thursday’s final training session before making the call on whether key defender Heath Grundy will face the Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon.
Grundy was a late withdrawal from Friday night’s clash with Carlton after the veteran defender hurt his quad in the pre-game warm-up.
The team sheets had already been submitted before a last-minute re-shuffle eventuated with Grundy making way for debutant Dan Robinson in the starting 21 which, in turn, elevated emergency Brandon Jack to substitute.
Speaking to SwansTV for this week’s HCF Injury Update, General Manager of Football Tom Harley confirmed Grundy’s fate will be left up to the fitness staff during the Swans’ final training session before the squad travels to the Gold Coast.
“He’ll be assessed on Thursday,” Harley said.
“We’re hoping he’ll play but you don’t want to take any risks on a player like Heath who’s so important to our setup now and for the remainder of the season.”
Grundy was the only new injury concern for the Swans who have a relatively clean bill of health aside from Isaac Heeney, who continues his recovery from a PCL rupture, Zac Jones (knee), Lloyd Perris (knee), Lewis Melican (groin) and Alex Johnson (knee).
Harley expects Heeney to re-join training as early as next week while Jones and Perris’ anticipated return should be after the June18-21 weekend where the Swans will enjoy byes in both the AFL and NEAFL.
