Bob Skilton medallist Luke Parker believes Sunday’s result “was a step in the right direction” towards the Swans recapturing the same pressure and intensity which has embodied the team’s recent success.
Speaking to media following this morning’s recovery session at Bondi, Parker noted how disappointed the playing group was with their effort against Brisbane in Coffs Harbour.
He said the team made a conscious effort to get back to the Sydney way against the Dockers at Drummoyne Oval.
The approach came to the fore from the very first bounce for the Swans, led by Parker (26 disposals and eight tackles), Josh Kennedy (33 possessions and three tackles) and Dan Hannebery (20 possessions and five tackles).
The midfield group produced a ferociousness and intensity which Parker said was “back to what we know works.”
“It was a big step up from (the Brisbane game),” he said, still smiling after his impressive super goal yesterday.
“Our pressure was up, our tackling and intensity was back to (a level) where we want it to be.”
While the effort was progress, Parker remained calculated and said there was still room for improvement before round one of the premiership season.
“Still have a long way to go,” he added.
Parker, entering his fourth season at the Swans, praised the performances of young talents Isaac Heeney and Daniel Robinson who are pressing for spots.
With a surplus of youth progressing quickly Parker said it was important for players like himself, Hannebery, Harry Cunningham and Tom Mitchell to help drive the group forward.
“Anyone can really stand up and be a leader,” he said. “We don’t want to leave it up to the same eight blokes each week.”
The Swans’ next NAB Challenge match is against Greater Western Sydney at Startrack Oval in Canberra on Sunday.
