Swans assistant coach Henry Playfair sat down with sydneyswans.com.au reporter Luke McManus to reflect on last weekend’s loss to Geelong and the road ahead to Friday night’s blockbuster against Collingwood at the SCG.
The review has been done and the game dissected from every angle. What did you take out of the game? What areas did we fall down in?
We were pretty poor in most areas we pride ourselves on – key phases in the game, attack and defence, stoppages and contested ball we were pretty ordinary.
So we were disappointed in most facets of the game, to be honest, especially in the second half where they steamrolled us.
The Swans have been known in the past to possess that ‘never give up’ attitude and along with an ability to rise when challenged. Were you surprised, sitting in the coaches box, when Geelong came at you the playing group failed to go with them?
Yeah I was a bit…it’s not what we’ve been known for, conceding and losing by that much.
We absorbed a few punches in the third quarter and they missed a few shots at goal which let us off the hook, so we were still in it at three-quarter-time.
When we were challenged we didn’t respond, even as late as halfway through the last quarter when we still had a chance to win.
On most occasions we pride ourselves on cracking in and at least having a real go at getting the game back on our terms.
Individual performances often get glossed over in a disappointing defeat but I wanted to know your thoughts on a few. Joey Kennedy, I thought, played a blinder while Lewis Jetta and Isaac Heeney provided a bit of spark and looked good, especially early on in the match.
For sure, Josh in the middle there, was a key player but he needed other guys to step up and help him out. We can’t always rely on Joey to change the tide.
Jetts started really well, he ran hard and kicked goals which are critical. We need that damaging run, ball use and finishing… so he’s got to bring that every week.
Isaac, well he’s got some wonderful natural abilities and he’s hard at the ball.
It’s a shame for the rest of the team that he stands out.
He cracks in continually, particular in the air, continuously takes on the game and is quite prepared to put his head in the hole and really have a crack at his contested marks.
We’re just hoping he continues to improve and works hard. He’s certainly started in the right fashion.
We play Collingwood on Friday night at the SCG. What have you made of the Pies’ form over the last month and bit?
We’ve had a look at them as we typically do with every opposition we play, they lost six in a row but won on the weekend.
They’re a talented team, amongst those losses there were a number of strong performances against the best teams in the competition.
They’ve certainly got some talent and are heading in the right direction. We’ll need to bounce back considerably to beat them.
Have you figured out any of the likely match ups for the match?
It’ll depend on the personnel and it is great we have Gary and Pykey coming back into the side.
We’ll have to wait and see how the match ups take place when the game kicks off tonight.
