The Sydney Swans delivered on their aim of finding leg speed and accurate kicking in Tuesday night’s National Draft, according to senior coach John Longmire.
As expected the Swans matched Melbourne’s bid at pick three for QBE Academy graduate Callum Mills, but it was the selections later in the draft that had the coach excited.
Following the departure of Lewis Jetta, Rhyce Shaw and Adam Goodes at the end of the season the Swans went into the draft with a clear strategy in mind.
“We lost some quality players towards the end of the season particularly players that can run so we are very pleased,” Longmire said.
“It was also really good to get two players that can really kick the ball into our football club.”
Longmire said he was looking forward to welcoming the new draftees to the club when they arrive for their first day on Friday.
“I can’t wait to get them to the club; it is an exciting time for them,” he said.
“Now it is up to them to work with the coaches and players to make sure they are learning off some of the great players to hopefully develop into terrific long term players for the Swans.”
Mills is the first Sydney-born player taken inside the National Draft’s top 10 after being selected at pick three under the new Academy bidding system.
Longmire said there was little doubt the 18-year-old from Terrey Hills was worth a top 10 selection.
“He is a terrific midfielder, he is as hard as nails, can play a number of different positions and he is a real leader,” he said.
“He has some boxes ticked so we are just really fortunate we have been able to get him through our Academy system to train him up.”
“Obviously being a part of the Academy system for a long time now he is ecstatic to be on our list.”
The Swans will now turn their attention to Friday’s Rookie Draft.
