Longmire looks for team effort
After reviewing Saturday night's loss to Collingwood, Sydney Swans coach John Longmire is after an increased team performance against the Saints this weekend
Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, Longmire said his team was comprehensively beaten by the Magpies and could only identify a handful of players, including co-captain Jarrad McVeigh and forward Kurt Tippett, who impressed on the night.
“It wasn’t the widespread contribution that we normally get and we normally play better than that,” Longmire said.
“We’ve had a real consistent run of form, we think, but there were a few on the weekend that we were a bit disappointed in their games, and that’s what happens when you get beaten.
“Normally the weight of numbers is very much on your side and we didn’t have that weight of numbers of the weekend.
“There were a few players who played pretty well, but we didn’t have the weight of numbers that we normally get.”
Since reviewing the game, Longmire said his initial feelings about his team’s performance had not changed, and identified the work rate of the Swans’ midfielders as one of the main concerns out of the match.
The coach said Collingwood’s midfield dominated possession and preyed on the Swans’ turnovers throughout the match.
“Sort of the overwhelming feeling after we’ve looked at the game again was immediately the same as what it was straight after the game,” he said.
“It was a case of work rate in our midfield in particular, we didn’t have that transition style of football that we really like to see, and to Collingwood’s credit, they were really good in that area.
“They worked hard in close and they worked hard both ways and we weren’t up to the standard that we normally show.
“We got shown up and we need to get better at it.”
Longmire said the match review process with the players would be important for the Swans this week, adding that there was always something to be learnt from a match.
“It’s the same whether we win, lose or draw. You always make sure on a Monday when you go into a review situation that you always get something out of it,” Longmire said.
“You get something out of wins, but you also get something out of losses.
“We certainly got a fair bit out of what happened on Saturday night.
“Our focus is now to make sure we play that type of football that we like to play which we were a fair way off it on Saturday night.”
With just three games remaining in the home and away season, the Swans now turn their attention to Sunday’s clash against St Kilda at the SCG.
Longmire said he was not expecting the likes of injured stars Adam Goodes, Lewis Jetta or Sam Reid to be available this week, but said that Gary Rohan, who has played three matches with the reserves, would be in considered to make his return to senior football before the end of the season.
“He’s a realistic chance before the end of the season,” Longmire said.
“We’re not sure that he’ll play this week, but he’s a realistic chance (before the end of the year).
“He’s been out for 18 months, so it’s pretty hard to pick it up after three-to-four games.
“He’s now gotten through those soreness issues at the back of the games and now we’re hoping it’s just about coaching the specifics of the game and that’s what we’re working on at the moment.”
