Swans upbeat with Goodes and Tippett to come
John Longmire pleased with Swans' return-to-form and there's a couple of handy ins on the horizon
Tippett and Goodes are yet to play this season due to ongoing knee issues, with the former getting through his first match in the reserves in over seven months earlier on Saturday.
Goodes' layoff has been even longer, dating back to round 13 last season, but he is also right on track to return this coming week.
Tippett kicked three goals and moved superbly before taking a knock to his back, but is surely looming as a big inclusion to line-up alongside Lance Franklin for the first time next weekend.
"He was moving quite well and got a bit of a knee in the back just before half-time and went off," coach John Longmire said following the senior's strong victory over Fremantle at the SCG.
"But his knee felt fine and he said he felt good out there.
"He was only due to play a half and that's why we didn't play him in the seniors.
"We wanted to make sure we controlled the game time he played."
Asked if Saturday's effort was enough to get him into the seniors next week, Longmire suggested it was before also dropping Goodes' name into the conversation.
"(Tippett) certainly looked as though he was moving really well," Longmire said.
"He moved well, he marked the ball well, he competed well – it's a pretty good start.
"Adam Goodes is probably another one that starts to come into consideration for next week as well.
"But whether the two of them come into consideration in the one week, we're not sure."
While the Swans, who improved their win-loss record to 2-3 against Freo, will try to even their ledger at the MCG, the club's reserves will be at little-known Harrup Park in Mackay taking on the Brisbane Lions.
Longmire couldn't resist having a little fun when asked whether Goodes was likely to return through the firsts or seconds.
"I'm not sure, it's going to be an interesting discussion," he said.
"Does he get on the plane to go to Mackay next week, where I think the reserves are playing, or does he go to the MCG?
"I'll have a chat to him. I'm not sure where he might want to go.
"He trained last week, we don't know if he'll play this week. If he pulls up well this week, we'd like to play him somewhere on the weekend.
"It was the right call to play Tippett in the reserves and the medical staff will have a strong input in regards to 'Goodesy'.
"He's a reasonable athlete though."
Longmire was delighted by his team's effort levels against the Dockers, winning the tackle count 100-64 as his midfield bounced back to form.
It was the sort of form expected of the Swans prior to the season starting, but they had instead been well below their best in losses to Greater Western Sydney, Collingwood and North Melbourne.
Longmire was now challenging his players to produce that type of form on a regular basis.
Of course, the Swans coach was also quizzed about Franklin, whose performance on Saturday night very much reflected that of his new team.
Trying hard early but making mistakes, Franklin eventually settled to kick four goals, including three when the heat was on in the third term.
“It was a credit to him," Longmire said of his maligned superstar. "He didn’t start too well, made a few blues, but he kept persisting and then his game started to really turn and he had a real influence.
"(His opponent Luke) McPharlin’s an All Australian full-back, they don’t get much better than him, and I thought (Franklin) really persisted."
