Swans’ ruckman Shane Mumford will return to training this week after a month on the sidelines.

Swans’ physiotherapist Matt Cameron said Mumford, who has not played since round three, will resume training with the team later this week following back surgery earlier this month.

“He’s up and running now and he’s working on his speed and so on so we’re bringing him back into train at the end of this week,” he said.

Cameron said the ruckman will need to return to match fitness before he is considered for team selection.

“He’s going to do some more agility today and he’s just got to get the rest of his body used to what training will demand of him,” he said.

“If any of us had a few weeks off we’d find stepping up makes the rest of your body sore.

“He’ll be due to start training at the end of this week and then he’s going to need some training to prepare him for the rigours of a game.”

Swans’ co-captain Adam Goodes has also shown improvement following a quad injury suffered in the round six clash with Adelaide.

Cameron said Goodes has resumed activity over the past week.

“He’s just started running and he’s doing weights as well as cross-training,” he said.

“He’s certainly more active than he was in the first week or so.

“Everything is going well, and we’re just going to build him now within the restrictions of his injury.”

Cameron said it is important that Goodes doesn’t return to regular training too soon.

“Like all soft tissue injuries, you need to build them up gradually session by session until they progress, but we don’t want to suddenly jump to sprinting and training when the injury hasn’t healed sufficiently,” he said.

“He’s continuing to heal well, and we’ll monitor that and we’ll increase his speed and prepare him to start training in the next week or two.”

In other injury news, Swans first year player Alex Brown is set to make his return to football next weekend.

Brown, who underwent hip surgery late last year, will pull on the Swans jumper for the first time when the reserves take on the Gold Coast next week.

“He had surgery in the off-season in October/November before he was drafted and he’s recovered really well from those and we’ve been giving him a pre-season period,” he said.

“(Alex) has had three to four months of really solid running and conditioning and now skill training, and he’s raring to go and he’s due to start playing next week.

“The reserves team aren’t playing this weekend, but he’ll be joining them next week.”
