Sydney Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery says his side will be looking for a fast start when they take on Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday night.
The Swans have had a number of slow starts this season, scoring a total of just ten first-quarter goals in the first five matches of 2015.
The hunt to get back on the winners list will continue for John Longmire’s men against the Demons after the Swans suffered a second consecutive loss on Saturday.
Hannebery said the importance of being ready for action from the opening bounce was not lost on his side.
“We need to make sure we start really well, our first quarters have been an issue for us this year,” Hannebery told SEN Radio.
“We thought from a numbers point of view we started well on the weekend which we haven’t been doing in recent weeks but clearly on the scoreboard it didn’t show.
“We need to start well and use the easy option in the first quarter to get the ball moving our way.”
“Melbourne are similar to the Bulldogs in that they are up and coming as well as a much improved side this year so it is critical that we start well and important that we win.”
The Swans conceded seven goals from turnovers against the Bulldogs last weekend and know they must improve in this area when the side takes on former mentor Paul Roos.
“The guys are pretty frustrated with the weekend as we thought we gave them too much of an opportunity especially in that first quarter,” Hannebery added.
“It was un-Sydney like the way we turned the ball over and made it far too easy for them to score which really hurt us in the end.”
Saturday night’s clash will be the team’s first match back at the MCG since last year’s Grand Final loss to Hawthorn.
