It’s been almost a month since the inevitable but dreaded news filtered through of the postponement of the AFL season and it’s safe to say that life as footballer now looks a lot different. Spending the majority of our time in isolation is certainly a far cry from being surrounded by teammates on a daily basis.

However, we are lucky enough to be able to keep in touch through online watt bike sessions, yoga, meetings and catch ups that all take place on Zoom, which I’m sure the lads will agree has been a huge positive in these times.

After a week of downtime following the AFL’s announcement, we quickly readjusted and began a new training programme that is taking place during the lockdown period. With thanks to the wonderful staff at the club who delivered gym equipment to our houses, we’ve been able to continue our strength work as normal.

Our football and conditioning sessions have changed somewhat due to the restrictions that have been put in place but thankfully we can still train on an oval in pairs. I’ve had the pleasure of trying to keep up with Sam Wicks over the few weeks and can safely say that the intensity of training hasn’t decreased at all.

Although the circumstances may not be ideal, there is still a fantastic opportunity to return as better athletes and players once the action resumes, which we intend to seize. We can either make excuses or make it happen.

Aside from training, I’ve been keeping myself busy at home through a wide range of activities. Sometimes it takes a situation such as this to realise how powerful connecting with loved ones can be. I spend a few hours each day chatting and laughing with family and friends back home, maybe even more often than I would if I was in Ireland!

Another activity that keeps me engaged with my mates at home is playing FIFA Pro Clubs on the PS4. For anyone that doesn’t know it’s a game where you can play soccer matches on the same team as your friends whilst voicing opinions on tactics and each other’s performances. Our team has had its ups and downs but we’re confident that we have what it takes to gain promotion back to division 5!

Although connecting with each other online is vital at a time like this, it’s not the same as being in the same company as someone. I’ve been lucky (or unlucky) enough to gain a new housemate in Sam Wicks who has been staying here since the government restrictions were put in place. Although this was mainly for training purposes, we have still managed to watch plenty of movies and tv shows. He’s been able to learn a thing or two about cooking as well! I’ve also met Colin O’Riordan a few times for a kick or to refresh our hurling (Ireland’s national sport) skills so all things considered, it’s been an enjoyable few weeks.

Thanks for the continued support and stay safe.
