I went to a school visit this week at St Mary and St Joseph’s school in Maroubra. It was NAIDOC week and the school wanted to see a couple of young boys, so Byron Sumner and I went and did it by ourselves.
I didn’t know what to expect but we planned it out, what we were going to say, and we went in and said hello and as soon as we sat down and started speaking to the kids it was pretty easy.
And of course, some kids asked about my goal kicking, or should that be behind kicking! So I just made it fun and made them laugh.
One kid asked me, ‘Have you kicked a goal yet?’ And I said, ‘Nah’, and a couple of kids were laughing.
I told them I had kicked 15 behinds so far, which is a record in the AFL. So I’m trying to look at the funny side because I never thought I’d have a world record for anything, so I’m pretty happy with that, and eventually I’ll get a goal!
I said to the kids that I’ve kicked a couple of goals if you add all the behinds up! It has been a tough week after a bad loss against Collingwood, but going to the clinic and seeing the kids made me feel good. We did the talk and a clinic and then we did some painting with the kids in recess.
I don’t know why it’s happening and why I haven’t kicked a goal. I’m trying to, but it’s not working. I’m trying my hardest to try to kick it straight and sometimes I even kick it straight and it just seems to turn last minute and fade away, so I don’t know what’s going on!
Anyway, I’m not worried about it like people think I am. I’m just trying to get a kick, that’s what I’m focused on, getting my touches up and getting my tackles up, I’m not really worried about my goal kicking.
I’ve been talking to Kizza (Kieren Jack) quite a bit, he and I chat about everything, just talking about footy and what we should have done and what we gonna work on.
I just try to move on to the next game, and think about what we have to do that week. I’ve done a bit of cooking this week too. I made butter chicken for the boys at home (Byron, Shane Mumford and Campbell Heath), and I reckon I nailed that, so some things are going right!
