The four will all have carried out the honour of throwing the first pitch at Major League Baseball’s Opening Series.
Goodes, who was named the 2014 Australian of the Year in January, has been selected to carry out the ceremonial duty on Saturday night when the Los Angeles Dodgers meet the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first match of the Open Series at the SCG.
The dual Brownlow medallist, who met Dodgers’ pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmicht, with fellow Sydney sports stars Sonny Bill Williams and Alessandro Del Piero on Wednesday afternoon, told SwansTV he was extremely excited about the opportunity.
“It’s pretty awesome,” he said.
“It’s one of the roles I’m lucky enough to get for being Australian of the Year that I get to throw the first pitch out there on the SCG.
“To be here to witness history will be pretty cool and to throw the first pitch - so many special people in America get to throw the first pitch at these sorts of games, so to be able to do that is pretty awesome.”
Athletes, celebrities and politicians have been granted the chance to throw the first pitch over the years with varying levels of success.
Goodes, who admitted he hasn’t been practicing a knuckleball or slider, said he hoped he wouldn’t be overawed by the occasion when his big moment comes this weekend.
“I haven’t been practicing, but I have been working on my cricket bowling downstairs against the boys, so maybe I should get a few (baseballs) out and practice,” he said.
“We’ll see how I go on Saturday night and hopefully the nerves won’t be too much for me.
“It’s going to be pretty special out on the SCG, even though it doesn’t really look like the SCG at the moment!”
