Smith’s 100th just another game
Nick Smith is focused on the team getting a win in his 100th game
The 25-year-old, who has recorded three consecutive top-ten finishes in the annual Bob Skilton Medal count, has been one of the Swans’ development success stories after being taken at pick 15 in the 2007 AFL Rookie Draft and is now regarded as one of the club’s most consistent performers.
Not one to hold his individual achievements above that of his team, Smith said his milestone match would take a backseat to the Swans’ overall performance this weekend.
“100 games is a good milestone to reach at such a good club,” Smith told SwansTV.
“In my first couple of years I didn’t play too much footy and was probably a fair way off to be honest, so to play 100 games is definitely a big honour.
“In saying that, we’re out to win a game of footy this week, so it’s just another game and we want to get things right as a team and really bring our best footy on Saturday night.”
Smith’s attitude saw him elevated to the Swans’ leadership group in 2012, the same year he became a premiership player with the club.
The defender’s commitment to the club was rewarded this month, when he extended his contract until at least the end of 2016.
Swans’ leaders Jarrad McVeigh, Ben McGlynn, Ted Richards and coach John Longmire also re-committed to the Swans this month, which Smith believes is a huge positive for the club.
“It’s really good to have the same guys around and wanting to still be at the club and still looking for success,” Smith said
“I think it’s a really good thing.
“It’s always nice to see that people want to stay around and share in success together.”
Smith hopes that success can begin this weekend, when the Swans host the Magpies at ANZ Stadium.
He said he expected a fired-up Collingwood side this week, who will also be looking to post their first win for the season.
“It will definitely be on come Saturday night,” he said.
“Collingwood come up here a fair bit and always are pumped up, so we expect nothing less this weekend.”
Smith said the Swans’ would be looking to produce a more consistent effort this round after failing to run out the game against GWS in round one.
“I think it’s been beneficial having a week off and having four sessions to get things right,” he said.
“Obviously we were pretty disappointed last week, but that’s done and dusted now and we can only look forward.
“We’ve got a couple more sessions until we play, so we’ll be trying to get those things right.”
