Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery travelled to Coffs Harbour as part of the Australia Post AFL Community Camp program. Dan provided sydneyswans.com.au with a recap of what he got up to over the last two days.

This week Adam Goodes, Tony Armstrong, Shane Biggs, Jordan Lockyer, Dan Robinson and I headed up to Coffs Harbour in northern NSW for our AFL Community Camp.

We left late in the afternoon on Monday, and arrived in Coffs Harbour at around 4:30pm. Almost as soon as we hit the ground we were on route to our first community visit at a local nursing home not far from the airport.

We met 20-30 retired people at the nursing home who were really into their footy, which was terrific to see. The boys and I were pretty happy to answer all their questions about the grand final and what we were doing in town. The nursing home community were also really keen to find out about how we train and what a regular week involves for us, so we talked them through what it took to play football for the Swans.

It was a great feeling chatting to the older people about our club and giving back to them was pretty rewarding as we could see they really appreciated us coming to meet them. I was really impressed with their interest in the game and it was great to find out we had supporters in that part of the world.

After our nursing home visit we headed to the Pacific Bay Resort, where we were staying, and Jordan Lockyer and I went down to the training facility and held a session with 15-20 kids from the QBE Sydney Swans Academy. We helped them through a pretty intensive training session and explained to the kids how we go about our training and they worked really hard and were really switched on. They really impressed me with how hard they trained and the way they went about it.

I found it really rewarding to see the kids from the Academy train because they were all really impressive and were all really keen to learn. It was great to see them go out and implement some of the stuff we talked to them about and they were really skilful for 15-16 year-old kids.

After the Academy training session we went back to the hotel and checked in and relaxed a bit with Tony and Biggsy before getting ready for dinner with some of the AFL representatives in the Coffs region.

We woke up early for a 7:30am breakfast at the Coffs Harbour Surf Club, which was good, and we had a pretty good brekkie there. We then split up into different groups. Locks was with Tony, Robbo was with Goodsey and I was with Biggsy.

We went to three schools before lunch and at basically every school we went to we gave a quick introduction about ourselves and then gave them an insight into AFL, talked them through how to sign up with us as a Red Rookie and then took questions for about 10-20 minutes. The kids seemed know a fair bit about AFL, which made our jobs a lot easier.

We had a quick lunch and then went out to our second last school for the day, where we held a bit of a clinic and the kids were all pretty excited to kick the footys. Even though it was pouring with rain, they were pretty excited to get out there and get amongst it, which was great.

We then went to our final school, and held an AFL Auskick clinic. Goodsey, Locks, Biggsy and myself went there and just took part and taught some basic drills and answered a lot of questions about footy.

After our final school, we all got in our cars and drove to the airport ready to head back to Sydney for our final week of training before the NAB Cup.

While it was a whirlwind trip up to Coffs, it was terrific to see so many kids interested in the game and interested in the Swans.
