'Head-on' welcome awaits
Sydney Swans co-captain Kieren Jack wants a nice SCG welcome for GWS on Sunday
The Swans co-captain, who took out his second Brett Kirk Medal for being best afield in the clubs’ round one clash, said his side were determined to make the SCG an unhappy hunting ground for GWS in the first Sydney Derby to be played on Swans’ turf.
“We think we’ve got a bit of a fortress here at the SCG and any team that comes up, we want to make that known,” Jack said.
“They’re the cross-town rivals and I know for a fact that they really gear themselves up for matches against us in the Derby.
“They’re competitive, they’re starting to build and compete, and they’re starting to get bigger, so we’re certainly up for a challenge this week and we hope for a big crowd out here and we want to welcome them onto the SCG quite nicely.
“We’ll be welcoming them head on.”
Jack said that GWS had made significant improvements since this year’s opening round, when the Swans recorded a 30-point win at ANZ Stadium, but hoped the Swans could also show improvement from their Easter Saturday win.
“They’re competing quite well,” he said.
“They haven’t won a game this year, but they have been very competitive.
“Round one I think was a 30-point victory to us, so it certainly (was) no white wash there.
“We know that GWS are going to be really competitive, so that’s something we can look forward to.”
This weekend’s Sydney Derby won’t be the only major event to take place on the SCG, with the annual Swans Squad Junior Clinic, presented by Canon, taking place on the field on Wednesday afternoon.
Jack said the clinic, which featured the entire Swans playing group, was an opportunity to reward the club’s youngest supporters.
“This is a day for our junior members … so they can come out and hone their skills and mingle with the players,” he said.
“It’s a great day and the players get a bit out of it too.
“These kids are paid members so they are the next generation coming through, so we want to look after them and make them feel welcome absolutely.”
Jack said both the Swans Squad Clinic and the upcoming Sydney Derby were both terrific initiatives to attract more young fans to the game.
“I’ve said all along, I think it’s great for football in Sydney, for young kids to be following the game and to have a game they can go to on the weekend that is going to be in Sydney every week,” he said.
“Whether that is GWS or the Swans – hopefully more to the Swans – but it just gets people talking and gets people interested and it generates more kids to come along and play and really have a go.”
