Sydney Swans forward Ben McGlynn will face a test ahead of Saturday night’s preliminary final clash with Fremantle at Patersons Stadium.
The 28-year-old, who suffered a minor calf injury in training last week, took part in the club’s Tuesday training session at the SCG and will travel to Perth with the team on Wednesday afternoon.
Club physiotherapist Matt Cameron said he was hopeful the small forward would be available for selection this week.
“His calf got sore last week and unfortunately he wasn’t able to play,” Cameron told SwansTV.
“He trained with the team today and he’ll travel to Perth and will train over there and he should be all right.”
Also in contention for selection this week is dual premiership player Lewis Roberts-Thomson, who played his first game since round four in the Swans reserves’ NEAFL Eastern Conference Grand Final on Sunday in Canberra.
Cameron said the 30-year-old had recovered well from his first hit out and also took part in team training on Tuesday.
“I think he played 80 minutes and he’s pulled up well,” he said.
“It’s day two now after the game and he was out there at training with the team today and he’s looking good.”
Cameron said Gary Rohan, who played alongside Roberts-Thomson in the Swans reserves’ premiership, had also pulled up well after suffering calf soreness in training last week.
“He was just a bit tight and sore during the week last week,” he said.
“He was fine on the weekend and he’s pulled up really well from the game and he’s ready to go.”
Despite being ruled out for this weekend’s preliminary final, Cameron said the club remains positive that key forward Kurt Tippett could recover in time for next week’s AFL Grand Final should the Swans qualify this weekend.
“It’s actually a similar injury to Jarrad McVeigh’s, but just a slightly higher grade, and it just means that he isn’t able to perform at a high enough level this weekend,” Cameron said about Tippett’s injury.
“He’s out this week but we’re hopeful he’ll be right next week.”
Meanwhile, Tom Mitchell’s season is over with Cameron confirming that the 20-year-old would undergo surgery on his injured ankle later this week.
“(Mitchell) was sort of jumping for the ball and landed on his leg and on his ankle and it rolled inwards, and it actually tore the ligaments on the inside of his ankle and chipped a little bit of bone off the front,” he said.
“He needs to have surgery, which he’s having this Friday, so his season is over.”
