Midfielder Dan Hannebery said the Sydney Swans must overcome late quarter fadeouts to put a win on the board this NAB Cup.

Despite leading at every change during the match, the Swans struggled in the final minutes of each term and allowed the Saints to finish each quarter with a flurry of unanswered goals.

Hannebery, who was one of just 11 premiership players to take the field for the Swans in Sunday evening’s 23-point loss to St Kilda in Melbourne, said the team was disappointed not to have maintained their intensity for four quarters.

“For three quarters of every quarter we played good footy but we just couldn’t sustain that for the last five minutes,” Hannebery told SwansTV.

“We were competitive for three quarters of every quarter and then we dropped away and were uncompetitive and went into our shells a bit and didn’t help each other out.

“We’ll look at the positives out of it, but we think we can really improve and carry on and play out until the end of the quarter.”

Despite failing to register a win this weekend, Hannebery said there were a number of encouraging signs from the match.

“There’s no doubt it was an improvement for us from last week,” he said.

“It was a little bit concerning how far we dropped off and couldn’t hold our trademark footy but there were some encouraging signs.

“I thought some young players played well and we’ll try and build on that and get better over the next couple of weeks and try and get better for the start of next month.”

One of the young Swans who stepped up this week was 19-year-old rookie, Jake Lloyd.

Lloyd collected 18 possessions for the match and kicked two impressive goals, both from the 50-metre arc.

Speaking to SwansTV after Sunday’s match, Lloyd said he couldn’t have done it without the support of his team mates.

“Jetts (Lewis Jetta) told me on my second (kick for goal) just to back myself in and to go back and kick the goal,” Lloyd said.

“To be honest I probably didn’t think I could make the distance, but it was good to have to support from the boys and good to kick those two goals.”

Sunday’s match was Lloyd’s second appearance for the Swans, after lining up for the side in the team’s round one tri-series against Carlton and GWS.

Lloyd said he believed he’d made improvements since week one, but acknowledged he still had a long road ahead.

“I learnt a lot obviously after NAB round one and it was my first AFL experience, and coming out this week I just had to play my role for the side,” he said.

“I’ve been playing half-forward and on the wing and it’s all about continuous run, which is my strength.

“I’ve just got to continue to work on what I’ve already been working on on the track if I’m going to play my role for the team.

“I was pretty happy with my own game, but was a bit disappointed that the team lost in the end.”
