There was a changing of the guard ahead of the Sydney Swans’ 2013 campaign, with a new leader elevated to the top job.

On the eve of the Swans’ final pre-season match, Kieren Jack was named alongside Jarrad McVeigh as co-captain of the club, replacing Adam Goodes, who made the decision to step down after four years at the helm.

A huge media contingent turned out at the SCG for the announcement, which also confirmed contract extensions for both Jack and Goodes.

Following his appointment, born and bred Sydney-sider Jack said being named Swans co-captain was a great honour.

"Not many people get to play at the club they grew up barracking for, and to be made captain is even more special. It's a club that has meant a lot to me,” he said.

Jack led the team out for the first time just days later when the Swans took on the Gold Coast Suns at Blacktown International Sportspark in their final NAB Cup clash for the year and was the match-day captain for the Swans’ round one encounter with GWS at ANZ Stadium.

The added responsibility agreed with Jack, who took out the Brett Kirk Medal for best on ground in his first regular season game in round one.

Jack continued to lead by example in 2013, with the 26-year-old earning All Australian honours for the first time, achieving a top ten finish in the Brownlow and was runner-up in the 2013 Bob Skilton Medal Count, behind his fellow co-captain McVeigh.
