Sydney Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said the five senior players who played in last Friday night’s reserves practice match will be in line for selection for this weekend’s opening round clashes.

Defenders Marty Mattner and Nick Smith, as well as Shane Mumford, Craig Bird and Mitch Morton, all played in Friday night’s match against Sydney Uni at Lakeside Oval and Cameron said all five will take part in full training leading up to Saturday’s AFL and NEAFL round one matches.

“They all pulled up well,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“Bird needed to play another game after being subbed out the week before.

“They all went well and got through fine and will be full training this week, and we’ll see how they go at selection.”

In other injury news, Cameron confirmed that defender Alex Johnson’s knee reconstruction was a success after the 21-year-old went under the knife this weekend.

“It all went well,” he said.

“He had his operation on Saturday in Melbourne and he’ll have a few days down there just recovering from that and then he comes back to Sydney to start his long rehab and recovery process.

“We’ll have some more info on him down the track.”

Cameron added that Gary Rohan, whose return date to football is still indefinite following his broken leg last year, has been making good progress on the track in the past few weeks.

“Gary is running now a couple of times a week and is actually starting to do some fitness running, so he’s really starting to push the envelope a little bit,” he said.

“We’re really hoping that we’ll be able to move into three sessions a week and really get stuck into some true pre-season training with the view to setting a start date for skills, which can’t be too far away now.”

Swans rookie Sam Naismith also remains on the injury list following a thumb injury suffered during training a fortnight ago.

Cameron said Naismith will be out of action for four-to-five weeks.

“Sam is just in a cast with his thumb right now, but he’s certainly doing some running training,” he said.

“He’s working on his fitness at the moment and as soon as he comes out of the cast we’ll be back to the ball work and hopefully playing soon after.”
