The Sydney Swans will blood two debutants when exciting duo Chad Warner and Dylan Stephens run out against Richmond at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon.
Selected with pick 5 in last year’s National Draft, Stephens has impressed with his outside run and skills with the football in hand.
Stephens said it was an amazing feeling to be told the news from coach John Longmire.
“It is something that I have dreamed of ever since I was a little kid, since I started playing footy, and now the day has come,” Stephens said.
“It is an amazing feeling.
“Things are obviously going to be different to any other debut, which I think is a good thing and creates a bit of variation.”
Warner, a 19-year-old from WA is set to play his first AFL game after showcasing his ability as a hard in-and-under midfielder since being selected by the club at pick 39 in the National Draft.
Warner said he is excited to be making his debut alongside a fellow draftee.
“We were in the gym at the time and got called out for a meeting so everyone was a bit confused as to what was going on,” Warner said.
“John (Longmire) was talking about debuting, he told Dylan he was playing and then he told me I was playing a few seconds later, so my emotions were going all over the place.
“Obviously to be doing it with Dyl is even better, I can’t wait to get out there.”
The pair are the first Sydney Swans players to make their AFL debuts this season.
"You're so happy for him? Well you'd want to be happy for yourself because you're playing too mate!"
