Defender Kaiden Brand and forward Sam Reid will be in contention for selection for Sydney’s Round 6 match against Richmond at the Gabba on Sunday.

Brand suffered a groin injury in a training incident ahead of the Round 3 match against North Melbourne, while Reid is yet to play this season after knee surgery during the industry shutdown.

Executive GM of Football Charlie Gardiner said the both are a chance to selection this week.

“Kaiden trained strongly over the weekend so I expect he will be available for selection, which is a positive for us,” Gardiner said.

“Sam is progressing well and is now back into full training. He will train with the squad again this week and is getting closer (to a return) but we just have to be mindful about the interrupted preparation he has had.

“We want to make sure that when he returns, he stays fit and healthy so we will assess him this week, but he could be another week away.”

Tom McCartin (concussion) looks unlikely to play with the club taking a cautious approach to his return.

“Tom is improving gradually, he still had some very minor symptoms over the weekend and we will continue to assess him,” Gardiner said.

“He is one that we won’t rush and there is a chance that he won’t be available, but we will have to determine that later in the week.”

Scans have confirmed injuries for both Lewis Melican (groin) and Ben Ronke (back) from Saturday’s loss to West Coast.

Gardiner said Melican is likely to miss at least the next fortnight.

“Lewis developed some groin soreness during the game and had to withdraw from the game just after half time,” he said.

“A scan has shown that he has a groin strain and will miss a couple of weeks, which is disappointing for Lewis as he had just found his way back in the team.

“Hopefully he can recover quickly, and we will see him back out there soon.”

Ruckman Callum Sinclair is also expected to spend this week on the sidelines as he recovers from bone bruising to his knee.

“We took a cautious approach not to play him (Sinclair) on the weekend even though he was feeling OK and he is improving all the time,” Gardiner said.

“We do have to manage it, so I don’t expect he will be available this week, but then we will re-assess how quickly we can get him back after that.”
