Young ruckman Hayden McLean has taken the mantle of being the club’s key ruckman in his stride despite undergoing a baptism of fire in the new role.

Standing 197cm tall, McLean has stepped in, in the absence of Sam Naismith (knee) and Callum Sinclair (knee).

The 21-year-old has faced some of the best ruckmen of the modern era over the first seven games of his career at the top level.

He gave away 14cms in his debut game last season when he went up against Fremantle champion Aaron Sandilands who stands at 211cms.

In Saturday’s loss to West Coast McLean was up against the more experienced high-flying ruckman Nic Naitanui.

Speaking on radio on Wednesday McLean said it’s been a steep learning curve, and he has welcomed the opportunity.

“My debut game was against Aaron Sandilands and then I have the top tier covered with Nic Nat on the weekend,” McLean told Big Sports Breakfast.

“Nic is a big name player, and has been for a while. He is a big boy and athletic as well, which you don’t come across too often.

“It was definitely a good experience on the weekend.”

McLean will have another tough task ahead of him again on Sunday afternoon when the Swans take on Richmond at the Gabba.

“On the weekend we showed that we can play, but it’s about putting it together for four quarters,” he said.

“We have been having patches of good football ..  we just have to bring that pressure front of mind this week.”
