Reserves power to huge win
Thirteen players kicked goals as the reserves posted a massive score...
The Swans played an impressive running game and kicked 30 goals through 13 different goal kickers to cement their place at the top of the AFL Canberra ladder.
Trent Dennis-Lane was the Swans best player, kicking seven goals, while on-ballers Patrick Veszpremi and Brett Meredith also impressed. Kristin Thornton, Henry Playfair, with five goals, and top-up player Eugene Kruger from the East Coast Eagles rounded out the best players list.
Veszpremi kicked the Swans’ first goal in the first minute of the game before Queanbeyan kicked two goals in a row. At the 10 minute mark Dennis-Lane kicked his first on the run over his shoulder and three minutes later top-up player Kieran Emery kicked the Swans’ third with a snap over his shoulder.
Playfair kicked his first from a mark 50 metres out and Kruger goaled on the run before Queanbeyan kicked their third and final goal for the term. But the Swans weren’t done and kicked four more before the end of the term to lead by 43 points at quarter time.
Those goals came through Kruger who kicked a banana on the run from the boundary line, Veszpremi from 50 metres, Jarred Moore from 40 metres out and Dylan McNeil after a mark 40 metres out.
It was one-way traffic from there on as the Reserves put on a show at ANZ Stadium. The Swans kept Queanbeyan to just two goals in the second term while piling on six more and extending the margin to 67 points by half time.
Kruger opened the scoring with his third goal from a free kick on a tight angle and a minute later Playfair goaled from a mark in the goal square. Queanbeyan then goaled twice in a row before Meredith, Dennis-Lane, scholarship player Jack Lynch, and Playfair each kicked goals for the Swans before the main break.
In the third quarter the Swans once again held Queanbeyan to two goals. A minute into the term Dennis-Lane kicked his fourth goal on the run before Queanbeyan kicked their two goals back to back.
At the eight minute mark Dennis-Lane had five in the bag after kicking another goal on the run, and a few minutes later top-up player Mal Picken goaled from 40 metres.
Five minutes later Nathan Gordon added his name to the scoreboard with a great running goal. Before the end of the term Playfair marked and goaled from 40 metres, and then Kruger kicked his fourth on the run.
It was a busy outing for Playfair who quickly added another to make his tally five goals, dribbling the ball through from 30 metres out and putting the Swans 96 points up at three quarter time.
Queanbeyan kicked just one goal in the final term while the Swans added a further eight goals to their score.
Emery goaled from a mark, Moore kicked his second over his shoulder and Gordon kicked his second on the run.
Lewis Johnston goaled on the run, Dennis-Lane kicked his sixth from a mark 50 metres out on the boundary, Irishman Chris McKaigue joined in the scoring and at the 27 minute mark Dennis-Lane goaled on the run from 30 metres to make it seven for the day.
The Swans will now meet Belconnen, who currently sit second on the AFL Canberra ladder, on Sunday July 4 at Manuka Oval at 2pm.
