Swans Reserves cruise to another victory

The Swans Reserves cruised to yet another victory on Saturday, beating the Canberra Wildcats by 241 points in perfect football conditions at Manuka Oval.

The Wildcats were first to get a score on the board, kicking a goal just five minutes into the first quarter. But the Swans answered quickly, kicking ten goals for the quarter. Jonathan Simpkin and Sam Rowe each kicked two, while Matthew Laidlaw, Kristin Thornton, Amon Buchanan, Jarred Moore, Earl Shaw and top-up player Breust all kicked a major. The Swans were in front by 61 points at quarter time.

In the second term, Buchanan had kicked two goals by the three minute mark, with the Swans dominating the ruck and punishing the Wildcats in the centre clearances. Jesse White, who was drafted at number 79 from Southport in the 2006 draft, moved to full forward and kicked three goals for the quarter. Buchanan also made it three and Laidlaw, Ryan Brabazon, Ed Barlow, Matthew O’Dwyer and Matthew Davis all kicked singles and by the main break the Swans were leading by 127 points after allowing the Wildcats only one goal for the term, which was to be their last for the game.

The Wildcats began to flood the backline in the third term and during this time the Swans only managed five goals, but also kept the Wildcats goalless. By three quarter time the Swans’ lead was extended to 164 points. Buchanan kicked another two goals, to take his personal tally to five for the game and Nick Smith, Barlow and Keiran Jack also goaled.

The Swans conquered the flood in the last quarter with exceptional skills and hard running, and added another 12 goals to the scoreboard. White kicked another three, to make it six and Lewis Roberts-Thomson also kicked three. Barlow kicked two goals for the quarter and with singles to Jack, Rowe, Buchanan and Laidlaw the Swans came to their final score of 38 goals and 26 points to be 241 in front at the final siren.

The usual suspects were influential for the Swans Reserves with Buchanan, Laidlaw and Barlow all making hefty contributions. Simpkin, Jack and White also stood out from the Swans’ team that dominated the game.

The Swans reserves next match is against Queanbeyan at the SCG at 3.15 pm on Saturday July 28, a curtain raiser for the Swans and Richmond game.
