THE influence of new players and quick ball movement has enabled the Sydney Swans to finally break its drought against Adelaide, according to midfielder Jarrad McVeigh.

McVeigh, who collected 20 possessions, five inside 50s and three clearances, was instrumental in the Swans’ midfield domination which allowed them to move the ball quickly through Adelaide’s zone.

“It’s definitely one of the best wins over here. We haven’t beaten them for a while, but it was a really good team effort with some standout performers,” McVeigh said.

“Our ball movement was a lot better this week and the pressure was up at a high standard all game. We know once we get that right, the rest will follow.

“Our quick ball movement enabled us to get over the back and we saw Ben McGlynn kick five goals over the back.

“We kept following each other up and getting over the top of the zone.”

McVeigh was delighted with the performances of the new recruits signed over summer and the new feeling they have brought to the club.

All had a significant impact on the game, scoring more than half the team’s goals and contributing solidly in the ruck department.

“They (Ben McGlynn, Daniel Bradshaw and Josh Kennedy) have been great along with Mark Seaby who was brilliant today and Shane Mumford in the ruck.

“They’ve been a real breath of fresh air for us and hopefully they keep playing well.

“We just missed out last week, but we really wanted to put in a good performance this week and we’ve started our season now so we just want to continue on.”

McVeigh pointed to a disciplined team approach and players carrying out their roles as key indicators for the future.

“Kirky (Brett Kirk) tagged Bernie Vince and beat him and we had Kieran Jack on (Tyson) Edwards so it was a really good team performance.

“We all played our role and we know if we do that we’ll win games of footy.”
