Bolton confident on the road
Jude Bolton says the Sydney Swans will take confidence from an impressive record on the road this season...
Sydney veteran Jude Bolton hopes the Swans’ impressive record on the road this season will carry over to Adelaide this weekend.
The Swans boast wins in six states this season, including at Adelaide’s AAMI Stadium in round three against Port Adelaide, Launceston’s Aurora Stadium against Hawthorn and Patersons Stadium against the West Coast Eagles in Perth.
Speaking at the SCG this afternoon, Bolton said the team’s away record serves as encouragement on the eve of the finals series.
“Our track record on the road has been good this year and we’re just looking forward to getting out on AAMI Stadium,” he said.
“I think we’ve come up against some real quality teams in the last few weeks but I think that serves us for good preparation going into this finals series.
“There is going to be no tougher team to play than Adelaide over there in front of a packed stadium, but we just can’t wait.”
It’s been almost a decade since the Swans have played a final in the City of Churches, with the last contest a famous victory against Port Adelaide in 2003.
While he was one of only three current players (along with Adam Goodes and Lewis Roberts-Thomson) who was part of that winning side, Bolton said the experience provides him with a touch of confidence heading interstate for this weekend’s clash.
“There is not many of our list who remembers back then, but I certainly will draw on it myself,” Bolton said.
“We went across (to Adelaide) and had half a team and had a win.
“The prize on offer, which was obviously a Preliminary Final, is just the huge carrot at the end of it.
“(This year) we just have to go over - we’ve earned the double chance this year - and we have a chance to have a crack at (Adelaide).”
Looking ahead to this year’s finals series, Bolton said the Swans last month of football has been the perfect preparation for this year’s finals’ campaign, despite dropping games to Hawthorn, Collingwood and Geelong.
He said the team has been tested against the best this season, and were more than ready to step up to the challenge this week.
“It’s a whole new ball game in the finals series and we’re just wrapped that we’ve been able to come up against some really quality teams in the last few weeks just to test our bodies and everything and we’re ready to go,” Bolton said.
“I think this group has improved and we’ll certainly take confidence from the form that our guys have had throughout the year.
“It’s obviously disappointing to have a couple of losses before the finals but as I said, there are no tougher teams to take on in those last few games.
“It doesn’t always go your way…and our last few games have been arm wrestles and that’s what you want.
“It’s not always pretty footy and I think it holds us in good stead.”
