There was more than one contest on the SCG yesterday, with the annual Redkite Celebrity Match taking place.

Due to the poor weather conditions, the match was reduced to a kicking competition - but that didn’t reduce the spirit and excitement of the many participants.

The two teams, captained by Swans’ Ambassadors Adam Spencer and Les Hill, took part in a three-pronged kicking challenge, which saw the teams kick from directly in-front, from 40 metres, and from the boundary line.

The celebrities, who included the likes of Bondi Vet Dr Chris Brown, Packed to the Rafters actor Angus McLaren, Australian cricketer Alex Blackwell and TV presenter Rob Mills, all showed their skills in treacherous on-field conditions at the SCG.

But it was Adam Spencer, who had never captained a winning team at the annual event that was the star of the show, slotting an unbelievable goal from the boundary line to win the match.

Yesterday’s celebrity contest was about more than kicking goals though, it was about raising awareness for Redkite.

The Redkite organisation provides support to children, young people and families that are dealing with cancer Australia-wide.

Redkite marketing and communications officer Nicola Morgan said the annual Redkite Celebrity match was about raising awareness for the organisation.

“It’s amazing for awareness,” she said.

“We love the Swans. They’ve been supporting us for 15 years now and their supporters have as well, so it’s just a great way to get the word out there.”

Morgan said the Redkite Celebrity Match also helped to get out the organisation’s key messages.

“It also helps to get the message out there that we don’t just support children, but also young people up to the age of 25.

“That’s what we really want people to know.”
