The Sydney Swans reserves are sitting pretty atop the NEAFL Eastern Conference ladder, undefeated after the first half of the home-and-away season.

Swans reserves coach Henry Playfair caught up exclusively with SwansTV to discuss how he has adapted to coaching in his first year in the role, and to talk about the players who have featured both in the seniors and the reserves so far this year.

In the first episode of this two part series, Playfair discusses the following:

Coaching:

“It’s been a really enjoyable challenge for me. Certainly a lot different to playing, with the main difference being with playing you’re more interested in getting yourself up and getting your body right, but turning to coaching you’re more worried about everyone else.

Lewis Johnston:

“He had a great start to the year and improved dramatically on where he was last year. We’ve played him in defence mainly in the start of the year, and he did really well just basically playing on an opponent and winning enough one-on-one contests.”

Nathan Gordon:

“(He) went up to the seniors, which was great for him to get a game. He came back to us and probably tried to do a bit much … he had a quiet couple weeks for his standards in this competition, but last week was a step in the right direction.”

Luke Parker:

“He got that one game (in the seniors) to experience it, which was great for him in his first year in particular. He’s been really consistent with his effort, he’s always cracking in, he’s a hard in-and-under player.”
