The Swans Reserves remain in third place on the AFL Canberra ladder after beating Tuggeranong by 39 points at Greenway Oval on Sunday.

The Swans led by 18 points at quarter time after Tuggeranong kicked one goal seven.  Nick Smith kicked the Swans’ first goal six minutes into the first term, from 30 metres out, after a strong mark and pass from Daniel Currie. Rookie Jake Orreal then kicked two in a row, one snapped from 15 metres and one on the run. Top-up player, Paul Slater, produced the Swans’ fourth goal on the run after a handball chain that lasted the length of ground and Currie kicked their last for the quarter from a free kick at the 28 minute mark.

By halftime the Swans had extended their lead to 43 points with another five goals to one quarter. The Swans’ goals came from Nic Fosdike, top-up players Shaun Wilkinson and Blake Harlock, Aaron Bruce and Orreal who kicked his third. Fosdike kicked his goal from a mark 40 metres out before Wilkinson marked and goaled from 45 metres. Bruce goaled on the run, Orreal’s came from a snap and Harlock kicked his after marking 35 metres out.

Tuggeranong opened the second half with two goals but by 15 minutes into the quarter the Swans had replied with two of their own. Matthew Beckmans kicked his first for the game from a snap and Smith marked and goaled from 30 metres. They kept Tuggeranong goalless for the remainder of the quarter and after Beckmans kicked his second, Currie marked and goaled from 25 metres and Fosdike kicked a goal from 40 metres out; the Swans had again extended their lead.

After leading by 61 points at three quarter time, the Swans failed to kick a goal in the final term. Tuggeranong kicked four to bring the final margin to 39 points.

The Swans went into the game with a young team and the top-up players played well across the whole game. Fosdike and Ed Barlow played out the game on return from injury.

Matthew O’Dwyer, who was drafted at selection 30 in the 2006 Rookie Draft and played his second game of senior football last week, was the Swans’ best playing on ball. Currie, in the ruck, Fosdike, on ball, and Orreal, who alternated between the ruck and forward line, also put in solid performances while Irishman Brendan Murphy and Smith were also good.

Next week the Swans meet fifth placed Queanbeyan at the SCG on Saturday at 3.50pm. The game is the curtain raiser for the Swans and Fremantle game.

This will be the fourth time the Swans Reserves play Queanbeyan this year. The Swans have won the past two clashes though Queanbeyan took the honours in Round One.
