Swans combine for 16 goal win
A fleet-footed Swan, a first gamer and a young-improver were among the Swans ten individual goal scorers in tonight’s 101 point win over the Demons.
A combined team-effort from the Swans secured the club its sixth win for the season against Melbourne at the SCG this evening.
The Swans ran away with a 101-point victory over the Dees, with ten individual goal kickers contributing to the score.
Not only was the win the biggest for the Swans this season, it was also the first time the team had won by more than 100 points since 2006.
Swans’ speedster Lewis Jetta was again at the top end of the Sydney goal-scorers, slotting three for the match.
Speaking to SwansTV, Jetta attributed his good form to working on all aspects of his game.
“It feels pretty good to have this consistent form, so I’ve got to keep it up and take it into next week,” Jetta said.
“It’s more of the defensive side that I’ve worked on in my game and the goals are just me being rewarded.
“I guess hard work pays off.”
Trent Dennis-Lane was also instrumental up forward, contributing two goals to the Swans’ score.
TDL said he is relishing the opportunity to be in the senior side after starting the season in the reserves.
“First of all it feels good to be back in the side and to get a couple of little snags is a bonus,” he said.
“I’m just trying to play more of a higher half forward role and push up through the middle of the ground looking for tackles, looking for intercepts and looking for any way I can pressure the opposition.
“That’s one of the things I’ve been trying to improve on and one of the things I’ve definitely been getting better at this year.”
Another multiple goal-kicker for the Swans was AFL debutant Tommy Walsh, who finished the game with two goals.
The Irishman, who has worked for two and a half years to get his opportunity,
said it was great to be part of the Swans win this evening.
“Was it worth the wait? Yes it was,” Walsh said.
“It was really good because it was my first game and everything, but the most important thing was that we won the game.
“We set ourselves a lot of targets during the week and really set down some of the things that we needed to do, and I felt we did them tonight so it was a good performance.
“It’s about improving and pushing forward from here.”
Walsh said senior football was a step-up in intensity from what he was accustomed to, but said he felt more comfortable in the environment as the game went on.
“It’s obviously a lot quicker than what I’ve been used to but that’s what I’ve tried to do and tried to play all of my reserves games with that intensity and try and practice for when I did get the opportunity,” he said.
“After the first quarter, I felt a bit better in the second, so it was just about going as hard as you can and trying to finish out the game.”
