Everitt eyes season opener
Despite notching up 27 possessions against St Kilda on the weekend, Andrejs Everitt was quick to focus his attention on round one...
Andrejs Everitt was one of the Swans standout players in the final NAB Challenge game against St Kilda last Saturday night at Coffs Harbour, but the 22 year old was quick to shift focus on to the overall team performance than his individual haul of 27 possessions.
“Yeah it (his game) wasn’t too bad personally,” Everitt said. “As a team it was even more impressive to get over a good team like St Kilda and do it in such a good way.”
Everitt’s effort against St Kilda was personally praised by coach John Longmire who said the former Bulldog, in his first year with the Swans, was growing in confidence and looking more comfortable in the back six - a role Everitt was keen to play on his arrival at the Club, despite the number of defenders the Swans already had listed.
“Coming into the Club I was hopeful of playing in the backline on the back flank, and with some of the boys going out, it’s been unfortunate, but it just shows how much depth our backline really has,” Everitt said.
“With Mal going out now, and with Tadhg, and Lewy Roberts-Thomson, as well as Craig Bolton, they are four who are pretty much walk-up starters.
“It really does show how much depth we have and that there’s healthy competition for spots back there.”
Everitt has been pleased with the work he has put in over the pre-season and said that the opportunity to play practice matches against last year’s grand finalists put the team in good stead heading into round one against Melbourne on March 27.
“I’m feeling fit and healthy, and ready to go,” he said.
“We’ve been lucky enough to play Collingwood and St Kilda in the past few weeks and we know what we have to work on now (to reach their level) and what we need to do before the start of the season.
“Hopefully that will all come into place in round one against Melbourne.”
Andrejs Everitt is a $281,700 defender in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.
