SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos says the club remains unlikely to recruit a marquee player during trade week.
However, he conceded the club’s attitude was “never say never” when it came to the AFL’s annual player exchange period.
Roos also said the Swans would seek to trade departed key forward Barry Hall, rather than allowing him to walk to a new club through the pre-season draft.
The Swans have been raised as a possible destination for several restless players including Port Adelaide’s Shaun Burgoyne, West Coast’s Mark Seaby, Essendon’s Andrew Lovett and Western Bulldogs defender Brian Lake.
Lake was the only one of that quartet that Roos ruled out when asked about the Swans’ plans for trade week, which begins on Monday, October 5.
“Brian Lake, we’ve never really had an interest in – not because we don’t rate him as a player, but because we expected him to stay at the Bulldogs,” he said on Friday.
“Shaun [Burgoyne] has only come out [on Friday] as far as I know. Now, whether that’s just the newspaper or what have you, I don’t know. But look, probably our position hasn’t changed.
“If one of them fell out at the end of trade week, clearly we’ve got enough room in our salary cap to be able to do something in the pre-season.
“At this stage, like most clubs, we’re trying to work through who’s available and who’s not available. As it stands now, it’s unlikely we’ll go after a marquee player but you never say never.”
Roos was more definitive on the Swans’ plans for Hall, who declared last month that he wanted to continue his AFL career with another club in 2010.
The key forward left the Swans midway through the season after admitting he could not control his violent on-field outbursts in the wake of a two-week suspension for striking Adelaide defender Ben Rutten.
“We’ve said all along that if Barry wants to go and he sees footy as a priority, we’ll support him in that,” Roos said.
“There’s a commercial value to him as well, which we understand, but I’d be hopeful that if a club is interested or two clubs are interested, we’d be able to deal with those clubs and come up with a suitable trade.”
