The Sydney Swans join the rest of the AFL community in mourning the loss of former AFL chairman Ron Evans on Friday.
Evans served on the AFL Commission from 1993 and as chairman from 1998.
He resigned last month after being diagnosed with abdominal cancer on the eve of the 2006 finals series.
On behalf of the board, staff and players of the Club, Chief Executive Myles Baron-Hay issued the following statement:
“We had the utmost respect for Ron, he was a gentleman, a man of integrity who will be long remembered for his enormous contribution to the game," Baron-Hay said.
“He was a wonderful leader, a true visionary and as Chairman presided over a period of significant growth and success in the national competition.
“He will be sadly missed and the thoughts of everyone at the Sydney Swans goes out to his wife Andrea and the Evans family."
The former Bombers full-forward was widely considered one of the most influential men in the AFL and oversaw a record growth in the sport - including two of the biggest broadcast deals in Australian sport.
He passed away at aged 67.
