Basics the key to revival
Sydney Swans' coach Paul Roos says his side has returned to form by employing the 'cornerstones' of the Bloods' playbook
The Swans thumped the Brisbane Lions by 61 points and carried that form into Saturday night's elimination final, beating North Melbourne by 35 points.
And, according to Roos, both wins featured a return to some cornerstones of the Swans' game plan.
"Just the way we're attacking the footy over the last couple of weeks has been better and I suppose just getting back to basic footy," Roos said on Monday.
"When you look at guys like Kirky (Brett Kirk) and Jude (Bolton) and McVeigh and the way they went about their football in the midfield. [And] the forwards [getting] in front and the defenders getting back to do some basic spoiling.
" So we've wound the clock back which has been good and it's enabled us to win a couple of games in pretty good fashion."
The Swans will go into their semi-final with the Bulldogs on Friday night with growing confidence. The side's experienced stars seem to have found their groove again after a run of 2-6 going into the Lions game.
"It all starts around the footy and guys in the leadership group have really stood up in the last two weeks. And when your better players are playing well, it makes it a lot easier for everyone," Roos said.
Senior players Adam Goodes, Barry Hall, Ryan O'Keefe, Darren Jolly, Jude Bolton and Kirk had influential games last Saturday in the rain at ANZ.
Kirk, Bolton and Jolly in particular smashed North in the clearances in the third quarter while Goodes (three goals), Hall (three) and O'Keefe (two) had the measure of the North defence in the second half.
"They've got a lot of pride and they love the contest and obviously when the stakes are high, like they were on the weekend, they were able to do it," he said.
"Hopefully they can reproduce it again because if they can, we give ourselves a chance. If we don't we become an average football team."
Roos said he was set to keep Adam Goodes playing in the forward 50. The star onballer has been restricted by a groin problem but has been dangerous in recent weeks as a forward.
"If you've got three really good forwards in O'Keefe, Hall and Goodsey, when we clicked in the second half it made us hard to stop," Roos said.
"He (Goodes) complements Hally and makes it easier for Hally and obviously Ryan inside the forward 50 made it a lot harder for the opposition to stop us."
But Roos said Michael O'Loughlin had virtually no hope of playing on the weekend.
"He's slowly improving but at the moment it's looking reasonably grim for Mick," Roos said.
The Swans champion has been suffering with an ankle injury and last played in the seniors in the round 16 win over Carlton.
Roos was tight lipped on whether young Patrick Veszpremi, a late call up for Craig Bird last weekend, would keep his spot in this weekend's side.
Veszpremi provided a lively presence across the forward line but inaccurate kicking saw him end with one goal and three behinds.
