Sydney Swans co-captain Adam Goodes has paid tribute to retiring team-mate Brett Kirk ahead of Saturday night’s clash against Geelong at ANZ Stadium.

Goodes said the team will be thinking of Kirk as he plays his last senior AFL games.

“For me personally, I’m going to make sure that that experience is a really positive and good one for Brett. And how do we do that? By winning or playing to a standard of football that we expect our players to play to and I know that’s what Brett expects from the group,” Goodes said.

Goodes said he had noticed Kirk beginning to take in a series of lasts as he wraps up his AFL career.

“Walking off the MCG last week, I don’t think a lot of players would have known but that was maybe Brett Kirk’s last appearance at the MCG if we don’t play a final down there. Those sorts of things are in the back of my mind every ground that we play at may be the last time Brett Kirks running on it.

“Kirky is one of those players who is very vocal out there but his own individual desires you won’t see on the ground.”

Saturday night’s game against second-placed Geelong may be Kirk’s last match on ANZ Stadium.

Goodes is urging Swans supporters to go to the game and help cheer on the red and white.

“Hopefully people come out on Saturday night and support the Swannies and see us really bounce back this weekend”

Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos has named an unchanged line up for the game, despite the same team losing by 73 points to Melbourne last weekend.

“Roosy has never been one to make a mass of changes based on one game’s performance. If you look the week before at Carlton, it’s pretty much the same squad that turned up that week and pretty much played the best game we played all year,” Goodes said.

“We’re not jumping at shadows. It was certainly an unacceptable performance against Melbourne. No doubt if something like that happens again in the last five games changes will be made.”

He says the Swans are looking forward to taking on the Cats.

“We’re really looking forward to the challenge and there’s no better challenge than to come up against the best team in the league. We know they’re going to be tough to play against,’’ Goodes said.

“Hopefully on Saturday night we can really show up in that first quarter and really get the confidence back in the group like we did against Carlton and really play the way that we want to play.”

Goodes believes Geelong will not suffer without stars Jimmy Bartel, James Podsiadly and Mark Blake.

“They’re a fantastic team from Gary Ablett down to number 36 on their list. I don’t think they’ll be too concerned on who comes in for those guys,” Goodes Said.

“You have Tom Hawkins coming into the forward line and Lonergan who can go back there as well. Their small forwards have been on fire this year so they’re not going to struggle to kick a score without J-pod there.”
