Sydney Swans forward Ben McGlynn has been ruled out of Saturday’s Grand Final against Hawthorn.

McGlynn, 27, strained his hamstring in the Qualifying Final win over Adelaide almost three weeks ago, but was not able to get through the required training today, and will subsequently miss the season decider.

Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said McGlynn was ruled out after failing to complete a sprint test this afternoon.

“Unfortunately Benny wasn’t able to train today,” he said.

“He did a sprint test before training and whilst he sprinted once, when he sprinted again he had some discomfort so really he failed that test in order to train.

“Not being able to train today and Thursday means he is unfortunately out of this game.”

Swans coach John Longmire said it was extremely disappointing for McGlynn.

“Since the initial disappointment after the qualifying final against the Crows, Benny has been extremely positive about his recovery,” Longmire said.

“He has been in at the Club at every available opportunity and I’m positive there is nothing more he could have done to make himself available to play.

“Ben has played a big role in getting us to Saturday’s match and everyone at the Club is disappointed he can’t play."

In other injury news, Swans defender Ted Richards is expected to play in the Grand Final following an ankle injury suffered in last Friday night’s Preliminary Final.

Richards was involved in a heavy clash in the first quarter of the Swans’ 26-point win over Collingwood, but Cameron said he expected the All-Australia defender to be ready for this weekend’s game.

“(Richards) is walking around well now from spraining his ankle,” he said.

“He’s walking around without a limp or anything and we’re planning on giving him until Thursday and working on him, and then putting him out to train.

“If he can get through that, which we expect he will, then he’s through to the weekend.”
