SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos praised the efforts of small forwards Patrick Veszpremi and Jarred Moore in the 61-point win over the Brisbane Lions that has secured the side a home elimination final.
Roos said the young pair's impact was vital to the reinvigorated performance of the buoyed Swans, which came after a run of poor form highlighted only by a four-point win over Fremantle in round 19.
"It was a good contribution," he said. "Our small forwards did really well and to kick eight between them is a good effort, particularly with Paddy (Veszpremi) coming in late for Ryan O'Keefe.
It was among the best games of 22-year-old Moore's encouraging year while it was Veszpremi's fourth senior appearance.
"It's good to see some of the young guys amongst the old fellas," Roos said.
"The thing I really liked [about tonight] was the tackling and the energy and the intensity... the things that we haven't been doing as well as what we know.
"So hopefully that gives us confidence."
Roos can also expect a selection dilemma with dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes (groin), and half-forward Ryan O'Keefe, who Veszpremi replaced, a good chance to return for next week's final.
However, he confirmed that goalkicker Michael O'Loughlin (ankle) would struggle.
Barry Hall was the Swans' primary target on Saturday night and Roos paid tribute to his presence and perseverance in a tough night that only welcomed one goal.
"They (the Lions) had three guys going to Hally all night and so probably the easiest place to kick a goal was a crumbing forward under Barry Hall," he said.
"A forward is always going to be frustrated when you've got two or three guys on him but he responded really well like he did last week."
Roos challenged his players to make amends for last week's 45-point loss to Collingwood and said the victory over the Lions was just the tonic for indifferent form leading into the finals.
"Our objective tonight was pretty clear," he said. "It was to pick a couple of guys who were out of form in (Nick) Malceski and Luke Ablett and hope to get them into form.
"And rest a couple of guys and then to play a lot better than we have.
"And now we have a home final, it's a real bonus. Better than heading to Melbourne or Adelaide or somewhere like that ... last year when we had to travel down to the MCG," he added, referring to the Swans' loss to the Magpies in week one of the 2007 finals series.
"It keeps us rolling along. And we love playing at our home venues and it makes a big difference to our guys. It's a significant advantage."
