SYDNEY Swans midfielder Ed Barlow says he's now a much wiser footballer after a disappointing 2008 season.

There were big expectations on the 21-year-old after he was elevated from the rookie list in 2007. He played the final four senior games of the season, including the Swans' elimination final loss to Collingwood.

Many tipped 2008 to be a breakthrough season for the likable former Scotch College student – and it started well.

The 196cm Barlow was selected for six of the first seven senior games, but 'Cheese', as he's affectionately known, made just one more appearance in round 11 against West Coast as a lingering hamstring injury took away his form and confidence.

The season has left the Bega-born Swan philosophical yet confident he's a better player – and  person – for the experience.

"I learned you can't just assume it's all going to go to plan," he said.

"From the way I ended 2007 playing those last four games, I thought it was going to continue.

"It was good to play those seven games (in 2008) but injuries came along and I sort of floated through. I learned I can't do that.

"It's been good, but a learning curve."

Barlow booted six goals and averaged almost 12 possessions a game in his seven appearances. But a hamstring tweak picked up sprinting for a ball at training soon got worse and turned into a nerve-related tear.

Barlow spent two months recovering before a return to the reserves late in the season got him back on the paddock.

"We're now on top of the injury but it showed me the importance of recovery," he said.

"Goodsey (Adam Goodes) says it's all about recovery and it's true – yoga, ice-baths, stretching, you can't do that stuff enough."

Barlow's run and athleticism in midfield bodes well for the Swans in 2009 as they continue to reinvigorate their list. And he wants to make next season the campaign he assumed he'd have had this year.

"For next year I feel I'm hungrier, wiser and smarter.  I want to do a good pre-season and play in all the practice matches."

"I've just got to back myself then hopefully push for senior selection and go nuts."
