SYDNEY Swans player personnel manager Stuart Maxfield says it's now up to premiership player Ryan O'Keefe to decide if he wants to remain in the harbour city.

Maxfield, speaking at the conclusion of the exchange period at Telstra Dome on Friday, said O'Keefe now needs to signal his intentions to the Swans after his plans to return to Melbourne were unsuccessful.

"It's really up to Ryan now, I suppose," Maxfield said.

"The first port of call is Ryan needs to get back to us and say: 'I want to remain at the Sydney Swans' and then we can start talking about contracts.

"At the moment, I don't know [what's happening]. We haven't spoken to Ryan or his management since the two o'clock deadline, so again, it's really up to Ryan to make that decision whether he wants to remain with the Swans."

Maxfield added that a deal with Hawthorn or Carlton was not close at all.

"None of the clubs that Ryan and his management indicated they wanted to get to – none of those clubs came with a formal offer," Maxfield said, before conceding it was now an unfortunate situation for both parties.

"It's certainly a risk, particularly for the player and the club."

Maxfield said he had "a range of different thoughts" on offer for how the exchange period could be better orchestrated, but he wanted to keep them to himself.
