For more than half of the Sydney Swans side, this Saturday’s final is going to be a whole new experience.

From the 22 Swans players who took the field last weekend against Geelong, 14 have never played in a Qualifying Final in their AFL careers - plus Sam Reid and Nick Smith who missed the Cats clash and are in line for Saturday’s final.

Among those players, which includes the likes of Shane Mumford, Josh Kennedy and Lewis Jetta, is Kieren Jack, who said he is excited about the chance of playing off to secure a home Preliminary Final when the Swans face Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.

“For me personally I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in a few (finals) games, but never in a Qualifying Final like this,” he said.

“It’s new for me, it’s exciting and we’ve got a lot of young players that are new to finals too, so I just think it is an exciting experience.

“I’ve never actually been a part of a (finals) game where you know you’re going to be playing the following week or you get a second chance.

“If we win this week we know what’s in front of us - we get a home Preliminary Final and that sort of carrot is enticing and I’m sure (Adelaide) are thinking the same thing.”

Jack has played in six finals to date, including three wins in Elimination finals in 2008, 2010 and 2011, but has never played in a winning Semi Final.

The 25-year-old said this week’s opportunity to secure a week off and a Sydney home final was the ultimate motivation for him and his team mates.

“The carrot is there, and if that doesn’t fire (us) up to come and compete then nothing will,” Jack said.

“We know we need to put in a really hard-nosed performance this week and that’s going to give us that opportunity of getting a home prelim, so we’re looking forward to it.

“Every finals game you sort of treat in the same way and in a way you’re sort of fighting for your life and the team’s life.

“But every finals game you’ve got to treat as if it’s your last and we’ll be going out to win.”

The talented midfielder, who was named in the 40-man All Australian squad alongside Josh Kennedy, Ted Richards and Lewis Jetta this week, said this year’s Swans side had the potential to really challenge this finals’ series - starting in Adelaide.

“I certainly have confidence that this side is developing into a really quality side,” Jack said.

“I’m really excited about this week and to be able to go over to Adelaide with these boys and tackle the challenge of Adelaide.”

Jack said the team would have to improve on their last performance against the Crows, which saw the Swans go down by five points in round six.

“I think your defence relies on your midfield pressure, and I think last time we played their midfield got a little bit on top of us and they were getting some supply to their forwards,” he said.

“We have got to work on that, and we know that so … the midfield battle, the contested ball and the pressure we put on the midfield is what is going to be key.”

Jack added that the inclusion of Sam Reid, who is expected to return after missing last week’s match with a minor gluteal strain, would also be crucial to the Swans’ success.

“It’s nice seeing (Reid) up in the ground in a one-on-one contest, so we’ll be trying to get the ball to him but I’m sure Adelaide will try to combat that in a few different ways,” he said.

“In terms of structure, to have a real key forward who can launch at the ball is good to have.

“Adelaide have a few (leading forwards) as well so we’re going to have to cut them out as well.”
