The Sydney Swans’ new General Manager - Football has been in the role for approximately three weeks, but his unique involvement with the Club stretches back over three decades.

When South Melbourne moved to Sydney in 1982, Moore was given the unenviable job of “forward scout”. Following the decision to relocate, he was given approximately a week to pack up his life and move north to organise the logistical nightmare which was relocating a football team. A task which he admits was under-planned, under-resourced and certainly not easy, but which he remembers fondly as “a bit of an adventure”.

Fast forward to 2005, and Moore - in his capacity as Football Projects Manager for the AFL - was standing in the players’ race on Grand Final Day, barely able to watch the last tense moments of the game. With him when the final siren sounded were Club legends Bob Skilton, Barry Round and Paul Kelly. This, he says, is his favourite Swans memory.

Moore worked in various roles at the AFL for 25 years, but ultimately it was his long involvement with and passion for the Sydney Swans which brought him back to the Club.

“There was no other organisation which could have lured me away from the AFL,” he said - adding that Jim Main was spot on with the title of his most recent book. It really is “in the blood”.

Returning to the pure football side of the industry, Moore says the greatest change he has noticed - and something which those who do not work within the clubs may be surprised by - is the enormous emphasis on sports science and the sophisticated way in which every aspect of the players’ programmes are planned.

Some things, however, never change. Working as part of a group of people sharing common hopes, dreams and aspirations, giving their best efforts in an attempt to achieve the team goal of winning a premiership - that is the constant.
