SYDNEY Swans midfielder Adam Goodes doesn't believe Barry Hall's fourth-quarter indiscretion was the sole cause of the side's 11-point loss to Hawthorn, but labelled it a "massive turning point" in the course of the game.

While coach Paul Roos blamed the loss on Hall's triple 50m penalty, Goodes said it was also a collection of errors throughout the whole team that saw the result go the Hawks' way.

"I don't think it's just Hally. That was one incident that cost us a goal," Goodes said after the game on Sunday.

"There were incidents across the game that cost us, and that's what we have to look at.

"The game's bigger than the individuals at this football club, and we know that it cost us a goal and it cost us the momentum, but we'll go back to Hally this week and we'll tell him we need him to be aggressive and be that spark in the forward line.

"We need everyone else playing their role. It wasn't just Hally; it was other blokes as well."

Goodes admitted the players were disappointed with Hall's reaction and conceded it stood out as an influential moment in the final term.

But, he then said he felt as equally to blame for the result. "I didn't come off the ground and go: 'oh, those three 50m penalties cost us'," he said.

"I came off the ground thinking, 'If only I had kicked straight, if only I had kicked a little bit closer'.

"There's no doubt everyone is sitting here thinking what they could have done better but there's no doubt that sticks out in everyone's mind.

"I kicked two points in the last quarter and I'm getting down on myself about maybe if I'd kicked those; that could have turned the game for us.

"There's no doubt everyone is sitting there thinking what they could have done better, and that's what we have to be thinking if we want to improve as a group."

Goodes gave insight into the Swans' pre-match routine and said each player had been asked to come up with a word to describe their intentions for the game.

He then said he told Hall he went too far with his aim to be "aggressive", but believed he shouldn't remove it from his game altogether.

"Only a few guys ticked those words off. Hally put his hand up and his word was he wanted to be aggressive during the game, and I said, 'Hally, you are aggressive and at times you step over that line'," he said.

"I said, 'I thought today, it pretty much cost us'.

"Last week he kicked six goals, and there's no doubt he was playing with the same aggression he was playing with last week."

Goodes said the incident, along with the match as a whole, would be discussed this week before the Swans head off on their mid-season break.

"We'll look at it tomorrow as a review of the game and see where it does sit, but I'm sitting here and I'm disappointed in myself because there are a couple of forward entries that I didn't kick into the forward line better," he said.

"We'll look at it in the review process tomorrow, and we've got two weeks to lick our wounds before we play Collingwood."
